MMS Concert Previews - FYOHNA and Oak House

This week's calendar at The Black Cat has a little something, something for everyone. Wednesday brings California dream pop duo FYOHNA. The video for "Ghost Town", set against a dystopian backdrop, visually represents how the abstraction of Katarina Gleicher's vocals belie the naked emotion underlying the song's lyrics. The gauzy vocals, looping rhythm, and persistent piano riff underpinning the beat are at one familiar and new, sounding like an unreleased track from Sylvan Esso or Wye Oak (or some surprise collaboration between the two). You can catch FYOHNA Wednesday night on the back stage, with doors opening at 7:30.

Thursday night brings Athens psych folk outfit Oak House to the back stage. The austere, jazz-inflected melodies of the band, and soaring tenor of vocalist (and guitarist) Gresham Cash, evoke comparisons as as dissonant as Radiohead and My Morning Jacket. Nobody puts baby in a corner, and no music critic categorizes Oak House in any safe or predictable genre.
