In lieu of our usual #NewMusicMonday post, we're bringing you a pair of concert previews. In a video that aptly and accurately describes our current political environment, we have award-winning Canadian folkster Dan Mangan with "Race to the Bottom". This shimmery guitar-powered number feels like Snow Patrol covering a Broken Social Scene song, the result of Mangan stripping down his more experimental impulses and focusing on his crack backing band, Blacksmith. You can catch them Wednesday night at the 9:30 Club opening for James Vincent McMorrow.
Next up is El Perro Del Mar, the Swedish outfit that is the brainchild of Sarah Assbring. "Breadandbutter" is the lead single from KoKoro, the artist's fifth studio album. Arranged using non-Western instruments, and inspired by Asian and African singers, the album expands beyond the realm of indie pop into textured world and experimental music. You can catch El Perro Del Mar at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Thursday.
