Los Angeles indie rockers James Supercave bring their singularly compelling sound to the District this Sunday in support of their debut album, Better Strange.
The record, released in February on Fairfax Recordings, is collection of charmingly weird songs and foray into the fringes of pop. Elements of eerily soulful synthpop and experimental electronica abound, the band as indebted to Tangerine Dream as to Scritti Politti. Lead singer Joaquin Pastor dexterously glides across and within songs to enhance the already otherworldly vibe of the music. His vocal range, slightly nasal delivery, and frequent use of falsetto call to mind alt-J's Joe Newman and Thom Yorke. I am greatly intrigued by this debut, and excited to see the band live.
Catch James Supercave opening for dreampop duo Wild Belle at the Black Cat tomorrow, May 1.
