MMS Concert Preview - Sons of an Illustrious Father and Nilüfer Yanya

All apologies, sports racers. The MMS braintrust has relocated from sunny Logan Circle to a sleepy corner of Mount Pleasant, but I'm back up and running on most cylinders these days. I'm coming to you with a pair of outstanding shows that will show the hot and steamy District a touch of cool this week.

First up we have Sons of an Illustrious Father at DC9 tomorrow. The duo-turned-quintet-and-now-trio produces a sound that's difficult to classify, a bit emo and post-punk with a touch of weird-folk, at turns acoustic and soulful. SoaIF are so unapologetically non-heteronormative that they've named their style "genre queer".

You may be looking at the still of the video and asking yourself, "Is that [the actor from Fantastic Beasts, the DCEU's movie Flash, or the other guy from Perks of Being a Wallflower]?". The answer to that question is yes. Along with bandmates Josh Aubin and Lilah Larson, Met Gala camp icon Ezra Miller contributes to the songwriting and instrumentals.

Wednesday sees singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya headline a show at the U Street Music Hall. A British singer with Turkish and Barbadian roots, she crafts an exotic, fluid, sophisticated brand of indie rock - a female-fronted analog to the lush soundscapes of Roxy Music for the 21st Century. If you missed her opening for the sold out Sharon Van Etten show at the 9:30 Club in February, now's your chance.
