Wednesday Is For Lovers - Perfume Genius, Novo Amor, and Stolen Jars

It's a boffo #WednesdayIsForLovers today, kiddos. We have a gorgeous new video from Mike Hadreas, better known as Perfume Genius, a stunning new track from Welshman Novo Amor, and a late addition to our calendarstravaganza from Stolen Jars.

"Slip Away" is the lead single from Perfume Genius' forthcoming No Shape, and the video is every bit as stunning as the song. With burgeoning uber-producer Blake Mills behind the boards, this song has a textural quality to its percussive intro reminiscent of early Yeasayer. The video, directed by Björk collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang, visually matches the tones of the song, alternating between softly elliptical verses and explosions of light and sound. Set against a visual backdrop inspired by Romantic-era art, lyrics like "Oh, ooh love / They'll never break the shape we take" allude to the Aristophanean creation myth in Plato's symposium. Dancer Teresa "Toogie" Barcelo turns the dominant gender paradigm on its head with the ferocity of a high kick, giving me another reason to love this subversively defiant video. You can catch Perfume Genius at the 9:30 Club on May 15.

Next up we have a song from Novo Amor, the stage name of of Ali Meredith-Lacey. It's quietly exquisite, unfolding like a slow-moving stream on a crisp spring day. Ali's breathy falsetto recalls tge "sad bastard" era of Bon Iver, holed up in the woods of Wisconsin nursing a broken heart.

We have a late entrant into our concert calendar. I completely overlooked that Stolen Jars will be playing Comet Ping Pong this Saturday. The vocal interplay of Cody Fitzgerald and Molly Grund evokes the musical tension of The Postal Service, and the song's delicate orchestration sounds like vintage Owen Pallett. This is a show not to be missed!
