#TBTV - The Weakerthans

Today's #ThrowbackThursdayVideo selection is The Weakerthans' "Psalm for the Elks Lodge Last Call". From the band's 2003 album Reconstruction Site, the song was part of a cycle about grief, regret, and hope in the face of loss. As intrinsically Canadian as the Hip, John K. Samson and his bandmates wove lush and intricately detailed sonic tapestries out of threads of the quotidian and mundane. Vocalist John K. Samson's reedy monotone was, in its own understated manner, as distinctive as Gord Downie's tremulous tenor.

The band is no more, but former frontman Samson is going strong in support of his solo record, Winter Wheat. He'll be playing Songbyrd Cafe Monday night.
