Trampled by Turtles and Wild Child at Americana Beer Fest - Saturday, June 11

This weekend brings together three of what I consider essential facets of life - daydrinking, street food, and great music - at Leesburg's Americana Beer Fest. Held at historic Morven Park, the event will feature more than 60 breweries, a food truck rally, an artisan market, and a game zone, in addition to musical performances by a pair of MMS favorites.

Trampled by Turtles are a bluegrass quartet from Duluth, Minnesota. You might know them from their breakout hit, "Wait So Long", from their 2010 album Palomino. Keith Goetzman of Utne Reader describes their music as "punk-tempo bluegrass", and it's certainly no stretch to see why. "Wait So Long" starts off at a brisk pace, and the band speeds up the tempo throughout the song because, "f*** it", that's why, approaching a speed where the conventional laws of physics crumble and time appears to go slower to stationary observers of the song. Their cover of the Pixes' "Where Is My Mind" might improve on the original.

We previously covered the live collaboration The Bad Marriage, which includes members of Wild Child, PHOX, Sun Nectar, and others, as part of our Friday Night Videos series. They produce smart, sexy indie pop that incorporates the back-and-forth vocals of San Fermin and the Postal Service rolled in a crunchier outer shell.

In addition to the music, games, and arts and crafts, there'll be a craft soda tent and beer, including a festival exclusive collaboration between Old Ox Brewing and World of Beer - One Loudoun. Proceeds from the sale of the beer, a session ESB, will benefit Boulder Crest Retreat, a wellness center in Bluemont, Virginia, treating combat veterans and their families.

Tickets* are still available for the event, and a complimentary shuttle service is available from the Reston Wiehle Metro station.  Join me this Saturday for an afternoon of delicious food, every type of beer you could want, and great music from a pair of bands I'm excited to see.

*Sorry, youngsters, this event is 21 and over only.
