Looking for something to do to start your Saturday evening the right way? Why not wander over from Georgetown to the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage for a special performance by the DC Youth Orchestra? This event, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Orchestra, will feature a performance by National Symphony Orchestra Conductor Marvin Hamlisch and alumni of the program.
A reception following the event will also serve as a fundraiser for the DCYOP, which raises 55% of its programming costs through subsidies from the DC Public schools and private donations. This allows the DCYOP to keep their tuition costs among the lowest in the area for youth orchestras, ensuring that the none of the more than 600 children enrolled in the program is turned away for lack of funding. Famous alumni of the program include Emmy-winning composer John Wineglass, author Tracy Chevalier (best known for Girl with a Pearl Earring), and Ward 4 Council Member Muriel Bowser.
This is a bit of a departure for this blog, but a worthy one at that. Come on out, attend the concert and reception, and contribute a little something to a program that enriches the lives and education opportunities of DC children.
